Datenzusammenführung – Data merge

Data Merge is a specific InDesign feature that enables merging a data source with an InDesign document, to create multiple variations of a document. (catalogs, price lists, business cards etc.)


Platzhalter – Placeholder

Placeholders are frames without content. They are implemented to hold open spaces for graphics or text that are added later on.


Vorlagen Dokument – Template

Templates are pre-formatted documents often used as guidelines for creating specific content. (letters, fax forms, catalogs etc.)


Seriendruck – Serial printing

Serial printing is the act of printing different variations of the same document (catalogs, letters, business cards etc.). Data merge is often used for this type of document creation.


Datenquelldatei – Data source file

Data source files are files that store data and the place from which data is retrieved.


Variablen – Variables

Variables, or Text variables can be added anywhere you would like in a document. They are used to automatically update page numbers, chapter numbers, dates etc.


Tabulator getrennter Text – Tab delimited text

Tab delimited text is a file that contains information separated by tabs. Commonly used to save Microsoft Excel files to be able to import data in programs like InDesign.


Flattersatzausgleich – Print ragged alignment/ justification

All text margins start right at the left-hand margin. The sentences are split up equally over the rows leaving the right-hand margin irregularly shaped.


Unterschneidung – Kerning

Kerning, the spaces between characters which proportionally distances them from each other.


Durchschuss – Leading

Leading, the vertical empty spaces between lines.


Grundlinienraster – Baseline grid

A Baseline grid consists of horizontal lines and is implemented to help you align things evenly in InDesign.


Laufweite – Tracking

Tracking is the opposite of Kerning. So instead of putting space between the characters you tighten the distance.


Textumfluss/ umbruch – Text wrap

Text wrap is a feature that breaks up the text so that it can fit perfectly around a picture, diagram etc.


Hängende Initiale – Drop cap

Drop cap stands for “Dropped Capital” which is the large capital letter at the beginning of books, letters etc. usually used for decorative purposes.


Harter Zeilenumbruch – Hard return

Hard returns are when you hit Enter and are used to signify the end of a paragraph.


Weicher Zeilenumbruch – Soft return

Soft returns are when you hit Shift+Enter and are used to signify the end of one line.


Glyphen – Glyphs

A glyph is the specific design, shape or representation of a character.


Doppelseite – Spread

A spread is a pair of facing pages.


Musterseiten – Master pages

The Master page in InDesign does not get printed. Its purpose is to be a template for all other pages in the document. Anything added or changed to the master page will be changed on all other pages as well.


Musterseiten-Elemente – Master item

All items that are added to the master page are called master items.


Zero point – Nullpunkt

The zero point is the point where the horizontal and vertical line meet. In InDesign it is set by default to be located in the top-left corner.


Geviertstrich/ Geviert-Leerzeichen – Em space

Em space varies depending on what font and size you use and is the width of the letter M in that particular size and font.


Halbgeviertstrich – En dash

An en dash is a mid-sized long dash and is typically used for a span of numbers, dates or time.


Druckvorgaben – Print presets

Print presets are the settings that are set by default by InDesign.


Laufende Kopfzeile – Running header

A Running Header is printed on the top of each page and is usually a short summary of the actual title of the paper title.


Geschütztes Leerzeichen – Non breaking space

A non breaking space prevents an automatic line break so two words that are separated by a non breaking space are prevented from being parted.


Ganze Montagefläche – Entire pasteboard

The pasteboard is the entire grey area in InDesign where you can put or store objects but they won’t be printed.


Hilfslinien – Guides

Guides in InDesign are grid lines that can be positioned freely and will not be printed.


Miniatur – Thumbnail

Thumbnails are miniature previews of your document.


Beschneidungspfad – Clipping path

Mit einem Beschneidungspfad können Sie einen Pfad oder eine Form erstellen, die das Bild beschneidet. Das Ergebnis ist, dass das Bild in der von Ihnen gewählten Form liegt und der Rest des Bildes abgeschnitten wird.


Steg – Gutter

A gutter in InDesign is used to separate design elements from each other.


Ausschießen – Imposition

Imposition is the specific order of pages for print so that the order of the pages are correct, especially important for books, booklets or other multipage documents.


Schlagschatten – Drop shadow

A drop shadow is an effect which is added to make an object look like it has a real shadow.
