Challenge: A large B2B dealer price book mixing collections, fabric and leather options, finish tables, romance copy and imagery, rebuilt by hand every pricing cycle.

Solution: Pagination price book software, generating the whole document from Bassett’s PIM data.

Why A Furniture Price Book Is Hard to Manage?

Most price list automation comes down to one job: take a column of prices, apply a rule, print it cleanly. A furniture dealer price book is a different kind, and anyone who has produced one will recognize why.

Bassett Furniture Industries is a US furniture manufacturer headquartered in Bassett, Virginia, selling through a network of independent retailers, design centers and distributors. Its dealer price book is not a flat list of SKUs and prices. It is a large document that carries, often on the same spread:

  • Collections and suites rather than loose SKUs, grouped so each product prints under the right collection, suite and group header.
  • Romance copy, the descriptive marketing prose that introduces a collection, which has to sit next to the products it describes.
  • The same frame in fabric and leather, each with its own option table and its own pricing.
  • Finish and option charts that are half structured data and half hand built, where a cell is sometimes a measurement, sometimes a price, sometimes blank.
  • Collection and product imagery placed at several different sizes.
  • Several price types, wholesale, distributor and others, that the team picks from at generation time.

Standard InDesign data merge is built for one repeating record shape, and it does not hold up when the page itself changes character every few pages. So, before Pagination, every new edition meant reopening the file, reflowing tables, placing imagery again and checking copy by hand, a job measured in days that came back every pricing cycle.

The Starting Point: One Book, Several Systems

Bassett’s product and pricing data does not live in one place. The base sits in a PIM alongside an ERP, and the pieces are stitched together before ever reaching a designer. The price book sat at the end of that chain as a manual artifact: data came out of the systems, and a person turned it into the designed pages.

The goal Bassett set was specific. Keep the exact look of the existing book, but make it regenerate from the data instead of being rebuilt. The design could not be simplified to fit the automation. The automation had to reproduce the design.

What Changed with Pagination

Pagination’s price books platform now generates the document from Bassett’s exported data files. The mechanisms that made the furniture pages work are where the real engineering happened.

Area Before With Pagination
Page styles Multiple page styles reflowed and checked by hand every edition One template set routes each record to the right style automatically
Grouping and headers Group Name, Suite headers and Category ribbons placed by hand, edition after edition Grouping driven by the collection, suite and group hierarchy; headers and ribbons placed automatically
Romance copy Marketing prose placed by hand next to its collection, often drifting to the wrong spread Copy bound to the products it belongs to, with control over the two common placement scenarios
Fabric and leather variants The same frame in fabric and leather kept as separate manual work Both rendered from the same data through shared fabric and leather templates, with no second entry to maintain
Finish and option tables Semi-structured cells typed and verified one by one Cells populate from the data where a value exists, and where it is blank the table falls back to the selected price type
Imagery Collection and product images dropped in and resized manually Imagery sizes itself: collection images at the top of the page, product images below, scaled automatically across page styles
Price editions Different price editions swapped in by hand The team picks a price type at launch and the document renders it throughout, including the colored headers that flag one price type from another
Data feed Pricing pulled and pasted from several source systems A scheduled PIM export feeds generation against live data on a recurring basis

Feeding The Price Book On A Schedule

Because the data is spread across the PIM and the ERP, the integration meets Bassett where its data already is. A scheduled export now feeds current product and pricing data to Pagination on a recurring basis, so the book is generated against live data rather than a snapshot someone remembered to refresh.

For the next phase, the same pattern extends through FTP and API so updated files can trigger generation directly, with the pagination volume scoped to the cadence Bassett actually publishes at, scheduled where the cadence is predictable and on demand where it is not.
